Distributed through the corridors of the hospital and the rooms of the gallery, small 3D-printed woodlice have taken up residence — in the cracks in the walls, on lamps, among plastic plants. Some appear to be watching the video. Some appear to be migrating. Some are just there. They are not announced. They are easy to miss, and easier still to mistake for something that has always been there. Visitors who look closely enough will find that they are being looked back at. Each creature is slightly different — varying numbers of legs, different feelers, different patterns on the back — printed in rPETG and painted in water-based urethane paint. None of them is completely accurate. Each of them is recognisable enough. They work the same way the video works: believable rather than realistic, close enough to the thing to hold attention, different enough to produce a small unease. The real woodlouse is itself a crustacean that left the sea and learned to breathe air, carrying the memory of saltwater in a body built for somewhere else. These ones have gone further still. FORSTADIER / PRECURSORS circles the iconography of the healthcare system — the clinical room, the language of care, the institutional forms — with detours into bias in language models, datasets, isolation and alienation.
